Like flowers in the spring landscape, AHCA’s April meeting is bursting with vital neighborhood news. We’ll start off by deciding whether to make sidewalk construction on N. Oakland Street our neighborhood’s next proposal for Neighborhood Conservation Program funding. Then, we’ll have a representative from the Arlington County Police Department give an update and answer questions about local crime.
For our main presentation, we’ll hear from Tom Petty, Ashton Heights resident and Clarendon Alliance board president. Tom will describe the formation, growth, decline and rebirth of Clarendon, as reported by the Clarendon Bureau of the Washington Post from 1919 until 1987. He’ll conclude with an overview of today’s Alliance and its work.
Continuing on the topic of Clarendon, we’ll learn about Penzance Development’s proposal to build office and retail space at 3001-3003 Washington Blvd. The project is in the early stages of site plan approval and the developer is seeking feedback from the community. (Recent news stories on this development project: ArlNow story and Clarendon Patch story.)

We’ll close our April meeting with a quick stroll through the history of Columbia Gardens Cemetery –38 park-like acres in Ashton Heights that is the final resting place for many notable individuals. This will be the last Ashton Heights 90th Anniversary history presentation until September. Don’t miss it!
